Early reviews are here!
Brown, a management consultant, presents a smart and readable guide for executives seeking to improve the effectiveness of their corporate strategies. Even though one-third of all business strategies fail, executives tend to stick with the plan, maintaining that a bad plan is safer than no plan at all. Brown shows how to break free from this mentality and makes her message stick with energetic prose and cheeky humor. She questions prevalent corporate beliefs and shows how following these misguided approaches can ruin an organization. She highlights change as the key factor; it’s the “anti-gravity” that will propel a company forward. Citing such successful examples as Nu Skin and Southwest Airlines, Brown illustrates key points on what works and what doesn’t, and concludes each chapter with a helpful summary. A new voice in a very crowded field, Brown provides an original perspective on corporate growth.*

Jedi Knight Rebel Brown’s book is titled, “Defy Gravity.” Her book is all about creating high velocity growth for your business. I am a big fan of the concept of “Defying Gravity.” It’s a task we entrepreneurs have to tackle every moment of our business lives. And this compelling, well-written book will have you nodding your head in agreement from the get-go. Any business owner trying to navigate today’s turbulent market will find a welcome lift.
| Marketing Dissector – Steven Parker
Let me say right up front that I was blown away by Defy Gravity. It’s fresh, timely and very relevant. Ostensibly not a book “about marketing,” it’s so packed with business advice that it manages to speak directly to marketers on many of the tough, strategic challenges that keep us up at night. The author employs both passion and logic to make the case for business change–but does so in a much more positive tone than most. This isn’t the same run-of-the-mill “do-or-die” change-mongering that’s all around us. There are no throw-the-bums-out undertones here, but rather a cool, mature assessment of reality that shows us how to recognize when a company and its target markets are parting directions.
|Talking BooksTV – Michelle Vandepas

Devouring Defy Gravity, studying it, using it as a guide to rethink what you do is probably the single most impactful thing that you can do for yourself, company, and community.
It turns out thinking about what you do, thinking about your business differently isn’t that difficult. It comes down to plain common sense. If comes down to re-examine much of what we have done out of habit and inertia. It’s about going though our lives consciously. Rebel’s book offers simple and pragmatic advice on how you might do this. It challenges you to challenge everything you are doing. It challenges you to get off autopilot.
|The Sales Heretic – Don Cooper
Defy Gravity is not just one of the best business books I’ve read this year—it’s one of the best business books I’ve ever read. It serves as a much-needed slap in the face for both corporate executives and small business owners alike. You’re likely to squirm while reading it. Yet it’s also a valuable blueprint for business success. Or as Rebel calls it, a flight plan.
|Defy Gravity Book Review – Tom Pick
If your business is growing more rapidly and profitably than you ever dreamed, you can afford to ignore this book (at least for now). But if it’s more like the other 98% of businesses—struggling to keep up with the pace of market change and maintain profitable growth—Rebel Brown’s Defy Gravity may very well provide your flight plan for resumed or continued growth and success.

From Readers Just Like You
Flight Stories are coming in from readers and I’m so excited!! Now you can read what entrepreneurs, business managers and corporate executives just like you think of Defy Gravity!
I almost hesitate to call this the best business book of 2010. I hesitate only because it may just be the best book of any kind, period. The business principles discussed by Rebel are very sound but so many of the concepts apply to our personal lives as well. I cannot imagine anyone who wouldn’t benefit from this book.
There are many great books out there with similar content, and most are about as enjoyable to read as watching paint dry. What truly sets Rebel Brown’s Defy Gravity apart from the pack is the ease with which it reads. With every example, every point and every story it’s like having a close friend sharing their experience with you. This book is alive with powerful insights into what it takes to succeed in a world where gravity holds us down. It’s a great title because if you follow Rebel’s advice it’s hard to imagine anyone not breaking the bonds of gravity to excel in whatever they do.
If it sounds as if I really like this book, you are wrong; I really love this book. I’ve read it twice and I’ll read it again, I’ll buy it for the people I care about and I’ll suggest it to my business associates. I recommend it to you today. It is simply too good a book not to read!
Steve Keating, Selling Skills Manager, The Toro Company
Rebel is a refreshing voice in a sea of regurgitated business rhetoric. Change is constant. As such, we need innovative frameworks that reshape our thinking about the status quo, change, our legacy assumptions and strategy. Rebel steps in to the intersection of flight and business strategy and shares a metaphor that challenges our suppositions of the past, present and future.
Mark Oakes, CEO – Intellimar, Inc.
Do you remember back 6 or 7 years ago, when The Innovators Dilemma came out? It helped all of us strategists explain what we knew in our bones already to the larger corporation, at least from a product side. It’s hard for the incumbents in a company to accept that there comes a moment, when a dislocation occurs, when new thinking and new approaches, simply supersede the current course and speed, and you have to change!
Well, this book takes the Innovators Dilemma to the next dimension, it gives us tools to look at dislocations, new thinking, and new approaches in many aspects of running the business. Defy Gravity gives us business strategists not only the permission but the “hitchhikers guide” to turning assumptions upside down, to asking the hard questions, and to simply get out of the rut!
It’s a fun read, not some boring business treatise, and the real world case studies and examples are a great addition. As far as I am concerned, a must read for anyone in a complicated, fast moving business segment, who not only could use some tools to more clearly options that they had no idea might exist, but also to help get your team thinking out of the box as well. Great book to hand out to your department!
David Bernstein CTO, Cloud Computing – Cisco Systems
This is a must read book if you are serious about taking your business forward. It is written by a knowledgeable and skilled professional, who walks the walk while providing straight talk.
Rebel has proven her skills and insights repeatedly, in a number of businesses. Here she provides some of those insights to the reader in an effective and understandable manner. I highly recommend this book.
Rick Thau, Serial Entrepreneur, CEO of Thaughtful Transitions
All of us are time poor and overloaded. So often inertia propels us forward, our businesses and strategies seem to be on AutoPilot.
Defy Gravity is a wake up call to become thought-full about what we do in our business lives. Rebel Brown offers pragmatic and thoughtful insight, challenging many of the bad habits we have fallen into, getting us to rethink what we do.
Her insights and recommendations are not theoretical or abstract. She provides concrete, simple ideas that each of us, regardless of our roles in business can implement. What she does is apply common sense and creativity–blended to force the reader to rethink everything they do.
David A Brock, CEO, Partners in Excellence
“Rebel Brown has achieved a soaring success with Defy Gravity. Whether you are a small business owner or a corporate titan there is gold in the case studies shared, the wisdom applied, and the high flying metaphors of business compared to a flight plan. Read the book, then shortcut your own growth, hire Rebel. She is clearly the fast path to take your business from grounded or crashing to a smooth ride and profit filled future.”
Chief Prosperity Officer, Prosper By Design
As important as Rebel’s book will be to many businesses, to me what is equally as important is that Rebel gives us all an example of what can be done when one has vision, belief, drive and moves with purpose and determination.
To businesses out there that are looking to grow in these challenging times, I say this:
It is astounding to me how so many well-funded companies flounder because they fail to practice sound thinking. Fundamental but critical, Rebel Brown’s Defy Gravity provides dynamic and time-tested wisdom that will clearly delineate successful strategies for business growth. If you want to propel your company to new heights, then I highly recommend that you read and learn from Defy Gravity.
Gil Namur, President & CEO, Life As A Human Inc.
Any leader, manager, or business professional seeking to excel will devour Defy Gravity, and immediatey apply Rebel’s lessons to their own businesses and careers. This book is destined to become a business classic! Are YOU ready for lift off? Because this book will certainly get your engines revved up! The author opens with astute examples that prove “if you do what you’ve always done you’ll always get what you’ve always had” is NOT true. In fact, if you do what you’ve always done you’ll lose momentum and encounter drag that will pull you down to earth and into a rut. This brilliant (and funny) collection of wisdom proceeds right on to instructions and examples for how to “defy gravity” and move your business (and you can so easily apply it to ALL aspects of your life) onward and UPward!
Dixie Gillaspie, Coach and Mentor, DixieDynamite
It’s easy to get stuck. It’s easy to do things the way you always have. And in today’s world, that’s just not good enough–not that it ever was.
Rebel Brown’s Defy Gravity helps you move beyond conventional wisdom and take your business to new heights. This book is filled with tons of information, as well as great examples, stories, exercises, questions, and practical tips.
If you’re ready for high velocity growth, this book is a “don’t miss.”
Ava Diamond, Women’s Success Strategist, Speaker, and Passionista
I decided to read Rebel’s Book for a couple of reasons. First, I stumbled onto her profile on twitter somehow, then to Facebook and then on LinkedIn. Don’t remember how, but it was a great day when I did. Rebel has a natural way to make you feel welcome and I can say it’s not in a phony way…I’m 3500 miles away, never met her personally and she’s opened her door for friendship and business collaboration that is truly great! Thanks Rebel.
Back to the book, I committed to reading it as I followed Rebel’s master way of engaging professionals using social media to help make her book a success and defy gravity in doing so. She was determined not to do it the old way. It was great to be part of the process and watch her go at it, full steam! Good for Rebel!
Secondly, I am coming out of past where I could relate first hand to the effects gravity had on business. As much as I tried to champion change, there was always a management reason to hold back. One of the terms I used, was an idea taken from the Staples commercial with the big red button, “Sometimes you just need to hit the refresh button and start a new course.” Rebel’s book is a must read for anyone in business and especially sales. You need to understand the complexity within the business you’re trying sell to. You need to recognize the areas of BIG gravity in that organization and determine can I win this deal? Secondly, you need to understand the value of this deal and how it will affect your business. Sales people are always willing to take on any business, It’s not just so. You need make sure you can deliver everything.
I could go on, but you need to read the book. Thanks Rebel for inviting me into your life.
Brooke Martin, Senior Sales Consultant, Process Fusion Inc.
It seems fitting that I read Defy Gravity (Propel Your Business to High-Velocity Growth) in its entirety, while soaring above the clouds on three connecting flights and two layovers, traveling from Reno to Texas. With that much down time between departure and return flights, I was able to really focus on the messages without interruption and with time for reflection.
I have had a business plan in place that has served me well as a general compass and that I have continued to refine as I go, so I relate very much to Rebel’s point that, “Our past doesn’t always relate to our present” and we must always be evolving.
With the information and tools in “Defy Gravity” I feel better prepared to focus on my distinct value in a way that remains open to ever-changing possibilities.
“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” ~Charles Darwin
Tele Raack, LMT
As a business coach, and as someone with a great deal of strategy experience; I definitely recommend Defy Gravity to my clients and executives.
Gravity is a significant drag on new and old businesses alike. Rebel has taken an excellent analogy, of flight vs. Gravity, and clearly lays out some practical advice to move any business forward.
Thanks Rebel, for sharing this message.
